Dopo che lo sceriffo Woody ha lasciato Bonnie per aiutare i giocattoli abbandonati a ritrovare i loro proprietari, è Jessie ad aver assunto il comando nella stanza della bambina, affiancata da Buzz Lightyear come sua fidata spalla. L’equilibrio conquistato viene però sconvolto quando Bonnie, che ha ormai otto anni, riceve un misterioso pacco e si innamora immediatamente di Lilypad (voce originale Greta Lee), un tablet high-tech a forma di rana. Intelligente, interattivo e irresistibile, Lilypad diventa il nuovo centro dell’attenzione durante i momenti di gioco, mettendo seriamente in crisi il ruolo e l’importanza dei giocattoli tradizionali. Per Buzz, Jessie e il resto della banda, l’arrivo di Lilypad rappresenta un rivale temibile, che li costringerà a confrontarsi con il cambiamento, a ridefinire il proprio posto nella vita di Bonnie e a scoprire cosa significhi davvero essere un giocattolo in un mondo sempre più dominato dalla tecnologia.
